Peeled Onion Press
a visual art press to redefine the book
Home

Welcome to Peeled Onion Press
—a place where art-making, writing, education, and feminist theory, intersect.

Founded in 2008 by Aileen Penner and Danielle Arsenault, Peeled Onion Press is an evolving project intended to explore and redefine the parameters of book.  It is an independent, collaborative, and honeyed enterprise.

Salmon Tales is a honeycomb of Peeled Onion Press in which Aileen Penner extends the exploration of book to include sea tales silk-screened onto fabric.

Our current series entitled, Movable Parts is a series of bodies, birds, bikes and botanical images. Science is merged with nature in fusing layers with calculations and equations.

Our summer series entitled Rooted emerges from the ancient Greco-Roman-Egyptian art-making process known as encaustic (from the Greek enkaustikos meaning to heat or burn) in which pigmented layers are fused together using beeswax and heat.

More specifically, Rooted is a series of vegetal images that have been transferred onto hand-made papers then set onto cradled panels, and fused with wax.  An additional layer is added when text and contour lines are etched into the hardened wax and embellished with pigmented oils. As is the case in more traditional books, the creations in Rooted have a most interesting final layer added to them by the reader —or in this case viewer— who reads, or arranges pieces of the story.
Much like how a poet plays with the arrangment of words on a page, we delight that the story being told, is re-interpreted according to the "reader's"  own experience and aesthetic.  In particular, the diptyches and triptychs (sets of two and three panels respectively) can be sequenced in endless ways, creating innumerable tellings.

We invite you to look through our portfolio, and welcome both your comments and requests for special orders.

We would also be pleased to hear about other venues at which Rooted could be marketed or, pollinated.
